Azure SQL for Dynamics GP

Hello,

I understand that Dynamics GP wouldn't run via ODBC over a WAN (According to https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/developingfordynamicsgp/2010/07/27/why-cant-i-run-microsoft-dynamics-gp-via-odbc-over-a-wan)  and that is the case when using Azure SQL.

Nevertheless, what if I setup an Azure VM with Remote services (Terminal Services) and Dynamics GP pointing to a DB in Azure SQL.

Then, the end user would connect to the Remote services server. Is this feasible? Does it work for a production environment? Does the problem of running GP via ODBC over a WAN remains?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

JC Fernández

RE: Azure SQL for Dynamics GP

Dynamics GP does not work on Azure SQL cloud database. The name DYNAMICS is a reserved word on Azure SQL, therefore you would need to create the databases on-premise, using a system database name other than DYNAMICS. Once this is done, you will need to migrate the databases to the SQL Azure as GP Utilities cannot create them. The 'sa' account does not work SQL Azure, so this would be a major issue to sort out. Finally, Dynamics GP company databases (and the application) make several calls out to the system database. As of today, you cannot run a query against another database unless you create an Elastic Pool - this is something not supported by Dynamics GP, because, well, Dynamics GP does not support Azure SQL.

Can we migrate on-prem MS Dynamics GP to Azure(IAAS) cloud using Azure Site Recovery ?

Are you using Azure servers with Microsoft SQL Server or Azure SQL?

We did few projects migrating customer form on-premises to cloud for Microsoft Dynamics GP, and its working perfect.

    JC,

Did you ever implement this?  I have a client asking about it as well.

    Thanks!

Dynamics NAV/GP – Dynamics NAV 2015 and Dynamics GP 2013 R2 have images available to easily deploy from the marketplace, pre-configured and ready for your usage. Like SQL and SharePoint, these images are built by Dynamics engineers, using the best practices as defined by Dynamics engineers.

    Thanks for your comments Sanjay.

But I think there is a missunderstanding. The idea is to use Azure SQL database somehow, not a VM, for the GP database.

A VM would be only needed to install the GP application. Is this feasible?

That  will work.   Points to consider is :

Disk IOP's.  This is determined by

    1) VM type

    2) Type of storage

    3) Stripping

    4) Redundancy settings

More IOP's  - better you are with regard to performance.

Another point to note here is Azure does not support true cluster.  You can opt for always on availability groups, which has has it own Quirks  - logins will not sync, jobs will not sync, which can be managed.

Having said that, GP works just fine on Azure VM hosted SQL.

    Cheers,
