My client is getting SQL error 10054 on an intermittent basis at various workstations over several weeks.  Has anyone seen this and what was your resolution?

    Hi Mike,

When users see SQL Server Message 10054 in SL, this generally means that the machine in which the error is displaying on has lost connection to the SQL server.  Unfortunately, SL depends upon an absolute constant connection to the SQL server.  Even a temporary disconnect can cause the error that you're seeing in SL.  That being the case, you can use a free utility (trial version) called Axence, to verify if network packets are actually being dropped (meaning a network disconnect between one of the SL client machines and the SQL server) on one of the machines where you're seeing the 10054.

The following are the steps  to get this up and running.  :

-- Download the application at the following website. Do this on your workstation as well as on the server:

    www.download.com/.../3000-2085_4-10395430.html

**Run through the following steps on one of the SL machines that receives the 10054 error message:

-- Run the NetTools.exe and install the application.

    -- Launch the app

    -- Click NetWatch

-- In the Address field, enter the name of the SQL Server machine and click Add.

-- Let this run (you can minimize it) until you see the 10054 error on the SL workstation that the axence utility is running on.

-- Once you see the error, do the following:

-- In the top, main window, click on the row that displays the SQL server machine name, right-click and choose export. Name this file MainWindow.htm and MainWindow.htm.

-- In the bottom section, click the little calendar icon with a 1 in it. This will display the last day of activity. If you are 100% certain that the errors happened within the past hour, you can click the clock Icon that shows "1h" as that will show the past hour of data.

-- Right click in the lower section and choose Export.  Save this file as LowerWindow.bmpand LowerWindow.bmp.

Another important item to note is when exactly the 10054 error occurred (date/time).

If any packets are being dropped this is an indication that there is a network issue.  Please let me know if you have any questions.
