Hello Everyone,

I am planning to do a code upgrade from NAV to Business Central. Can someone assist me in this by providing relevant material, information or any tutorial? It would be a great help.

Thanks.

Hi, Please note that there is a big prerequisite for you to use the method provided by Microsoft, you must have a developer license or partner license.

    Hope this help as well.
    Thanks.

    Prerequisites before starting
    1. NAV Version
      • Know your current NAV version. Direct upgrade is not possible from older versions (e.g., NAV 2009/2013).
      • Typically, you must first upgrade to NAV 2018 or BC On-Prem v14 before moving forward.
    2. Customizations Review
      • Identify all customizations (C/AL code, modified base objects, reports).
      • Plan to move them into AL extensions (because BC doesn’t allow direct C/AL changes).
    3. Environment Setup
      • Install Visual Studio Code, AL Language extension, and connect to your BC sandbox.
      • Prepare a DevOps repository for source control.
    4. Data & Licenses
      • Backup NAV databases before starting.
      • Ensure you have the proper BC licenses (SaaS or On-Prem).
Step 1 – Prepare NAV Database
    • Upgrade your existing NAV database schema to NAV 2018 or BC v14 (C/AL environment).
    • Compile all objects and resolve issues.
Step 2 – Convert Code to AL
    • Export C/AL customizations using Txt2AL tool.
    • Refactor them into AL extensions (event subscriptions, table extensions, page extensions).
    • Handle obsolete functions and features.
    Step 3 – Technical Upgrade
    • Move your database into Business Central.
    • Run schema synchronization and data conversion.
