Is Prod, Test and Dev instances nessesary?

Hello people,

We are right now using only the Sales module in dynamics and i"m the only one who was systemadmin and does the configs. It feels like an extra step to import from Dev>test>prod, because usually, I do the customization and also the testing in development. What would you say? Would it be enough with only Dev & Prod? Thanks.

I have the same question (0)

Thank you for the question - speaking from support experience, I have helped many customers over the years and any situation where the customer had not had a test or dev environment in addition to UAT and production often resulted in tricky situations. For example, we often have situations where a bad data condition would need to be preserved for data analysis - however, just keeping a UAT environment might not provide enough flexibility as that is reserved for testing freshly installed hotfixes. Often, restoring a prod / UAT environment to a test environment where possible scripts can be tested while keeping UAT free gives enough flexibility for a wide range of circumstances. While it is someone cumbersome to maintain, it does pay off during the lifecycle of the product (even if only using one module - one module alone can be complicated enough!)

    Hi.

I don’t know if you use D365 Supply Chain Management, D365 Finance or D365 Sales but if you use D365SCM or D365F you are force to use at least LiVE and Stage. In Stage you cannot modify something code but you have to do your Golden Config and testing before updates. If you need some coding some other environments are necessary.

    Best regards

    Christoph

In my opinion, it highly depends on the following things:

    - how many users

    - how business critical is the CRM

    - how often do you release stuff / how flexible are you in releasing new stuff

    - how big is the change that you made?

If you are trying out a plugin wich auto-generates monthly invoices, you for sure want to test it.

If you are just creating a new field, I will also just deploy to PROD.

If you are able to deploy (nearly) daily, it is not a big deal if you can fix stuff rather fast. But if you can only deploy once a month, you better make sure you dont break stuff.

I think you get what I am pointing towards. It is your choice in the end, just take a reasonable approach.

In Germany we would say act "nach Bestem Wissen und Gewissen" (to the best of our knowledge and belief).
