Negative Qty on a Production BOM

Hi Everyone!

Common in mfg is clients who want to have a negative qty on a BOM to recover some material in production.

This works great when you manually create Production Orders but when carrying out the item from Planning Worksheet, the Prod Order Component lines are only creating for the items with a positive value. So the negative Production BOM Line is dropping.

.
Any ideas?
I have the same question (0)

I was just going through the documentation and I don't think we have way to have negative BOM in planning worksheet.

    Hi,

This is possible within Business Central so can you confirm which version you are currently running and has there been any bespoke code added around this area?  See example below.

Production BOM has the following lines.

I created demand using a demand forecast for the item and was able to create a planned production order from the planning worksheet.  When I look at the components I can see the following.

We have used this on a number of sites ourselves so it does work as I believe you require.

    Hope that helps,
    Shauna

I can also confirm that BOM lines with a negative quantity are transferred over to the prod. order components. It works when the prod. order is created manually or from the planning worksheet.

Also, the post below is regarding AX not Business Central.

Is there any disadvantage to adding a negative number to consumption? I want to use it with co-product.

    Hi,

This is standard behavior. The Planning Worksheet/MRP explodes BOMs only for positive consumption (dependent demand). Negative BOM lines are treated as by-products/returns, so they’re ignored when Carrying Out action messages → the created Prod. Order will only get the positive component lines.
    Ways to handle it:
    1. Refresh after Carry Out (no code):
After the Prod. Orders are created from the Planning Worksheet, open them and run Actions → Replan/Refresh Production Order. That re-explodes the BOM like the manual-create flow and will bring in the negative lines. If you don’t want to do this manually every time, see #2.
    2. Tiny automation :
Add a small subscriber that, after Carry Out creates the Prod. Order, calls the same Refresh/Calc Prod. Order routine. That keeps your planning flow but guarantees the negative lines are inserted automatically.
    3. Model as additional output (process workaround):
Many manufacturers treat the recovered material as extra output rather than a “negative component.”
      • Keep the BOM with only positive components.
      • When reporting production, add a line in the Output/Production Journal for the recovered item (positive qty).
      • This preserves planning logic (no dependent demand for a “negative component”) and still returns stock properly.
    4. ISV / custom logic:
If you truly need negative BOM lines to be created at Carry Out time, extend the Carry Out logic to copy negative lines from the Production BOM into Prod. Order Component with negative quantities. Be sure to handle: item tracking, flushing method, costing effects, and reservations/picks.
    Why MRP ignores them:
Planning engines calculate supply for demand; negative quantities don’t create demand for supply, so they’re excluded by design. That’s why manual “Create Prod. Order” (which simply copies the BOM) shows them, but “Carry Out” (which is planning-driven) does not.

This is an old thread, I would suggest creating a new post with this question on the forum
