Dynamics CRM to GP Integration

I am aware of the free connection tool available for CRM/GP integrations, but was told it has limited touch points and will only integrate for one company.  Therefore, it appears that customization is required in many cases.  Does the customer need to purchase eConnect to do the customizations?  If so, I assume if they own the Integration Suite in GP 2010 then they have eConnect for this use.  If they are on GP 2010 but do not own Integration Suite, do they need to purchase it in order to have a custom integration?
