How to enforce strict operation sequence in Production Orders (D365FO)?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a way to enforce a strict sequence of operations in the production process in D365 Finance & Supply Chain Management.

Business requirement:
Operation 20 should not be allowed to start until Operation 10 is finished
In other words, each next operation must be blocked until the previous one is fully completed.

Current behavior:
With the standard setup, I can start and even finish the last operation without starting or finishing the previous ones. This breaks the logical production flow.

Is there a standard configuration, parameter, or production control setting in D365FO that enforces a strict operation sequence? Or does this require a customization?

Any guidance or best practices would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

You need to use the Parameters under Production Control > Setup > Manufacturing Execution > Production order defaults:

If you select Validate startup quantities, you can configure the validation method to be based on the Previous operations quantity being started or RAF'd. This is mostly used in conjunction with the Production floor execution interface or Job card terminals, but should suit your scenario. Please let me know if it works.

I am also facing the similar problem and I do agree with your answer but It might not working in scenario where I need to restrict starting of last operation before completion of all operation that are previous to it.

    For Example:
    After OPR 10 - Next 50
    After OPR 20 - Next 50
    After OPR 30 - Next 50
    After OPR 40 - Next 50
    After OPR 50 - Next 0

So, here all first 4 OPR are independent but OPR 50 should only start only after all 10, 20, 30 & 40 have been completed. In standard, System is only considering any one of previous operation completion not all 4.

Please help if you have worked on any such sceanrio.

    Thanks.

    Hi,
Have you explored the option "Link type" in the Route. Please find the below explaination

In Dynamics 365 F&O production routing, the Link Type defines how an operation connects to the next one, specifically determining how route scheduling handles timing. The two primary, configurable options are Soft (default, parallel allowed) and Hard (sequential, fixed timing).
Soft Link: Operations are linked but not strictly constrained by timing. This allows for parallel operations or flexibility in scheduling.
Hard Link: Operations are rigidly linked, meaning the start time of the next operation is strictly dependent on the finish time of the previous one.

Thanks for replying withing a very short time.

Actually, I have already checked the Link Type "Soft", "Hard" & "Blank" but neither of it helping me in achieving what I am looking for. I have checked it once more after your reply but not working.

I would appreciate any work around solution, I am using Job scheduling along with MES and just want to block Production Order Completion (RAF) till Quality Check, so Quality Order should be created first and then only Prod should end.
Last Operation OPR 50 was QC Operation actually on which I was trying to create Quality Order. Also, Please comment if there is any possibility to exclude QC Operation and have all 4 independent Operations.

    Thanks once again.

    Hi,

I am not sure if you have explored Quality associations featue in the Inventory management.
For your scenario, "block Production Order Completion (RAF) till Quality Check, so Quality Order should be created first and then only Prod should end.", Quality associations for the FG item can be defined as below

    Reference type=Production
Event type= Report as finised, Execution= After
    Event blocking=End

This process will create a "quality order" once the RAF was done and Block the ending of the production order until the quality order was "Passed".

If the last operation is "QC operation", I guess this can be skipped based on the above setup and all the other operations can be defined in the standard method.

    Regards

I have explored this one as well. But, this will not work as person should be able RAF the production from MES window itself and this functionality work only when RAF from D365 Interface from Production Master Page.

So, I was using the Quality Order Creation on Operation level and also before the RAF of Operation because after RAF of Operation, we don't have feasibility to add some more route operation in case of re-work when Quality Fails.

So, looking for an option where I can add the route operation after Quality Order Processing. And Quality should be created from MES Interface itself.

Thanks again @KR-05031158-0 for your quick response.

I had done RAF from the PFE. A quality order got genereated for the FG item.
