I cannot select Microsoft Business Central as my data source in Power Bi lately.

Is it just me or whenever I go to Home tab, then Get data then More... then on Online Services when I select "Dynamics 365 Business Central" I would get this error message?
Unable to connect

We encountered an error while trying to connect.
Details: "There were more columns in the result than expected."

I would get these similar looking errors regardless if I am working on an existing Power Bi report that is connected to Dynamics Business Central or starting completely from scratch without getting any opportunity to "filter out my 7+ columns" from the error message.
DataFormat.Error: There were more columns in the result than expected.
Details:
    Count=7

I don't believe it is because of my Power Bi Desktop version, as I have heard others using slightly older builds reach similar errors as mine.
For troubleshooting, I did click on Edit and attempt to insert my Production environment, tenant values and other parameters to be met with the same error message.

Is this happening to you too?
If you found a solution to this, your help will much be appreciated.
I have the same question (10)

    Hello,

This is a widespread issue with the Power BI → Dynamics 365 Business Central connector.
The connector is currently broken because BC started returning extra metadata columns, and Power BI Desktop rejects them with:
“There were more columns in the result than expected.”
It’s not your version, not your settings — everyone is seeing this right now.

The BC connector in Power BI Desktop is temporarily broken.
Caused by a Microsoft-side change in BC/connector metadata.
    You can’t fix it locally.
    Workaround
Use OData or API endpoints instead until Microsoft patches it.
    Example OData:
    https://api.businesscentral.dynamics.com/v2.0/<tenant>/<env>/ODataV4/Company('MyCompany')/Customer

    It works reliably.

I can confirm OData Feeds does work for brand new Power Bi reports when introducing new data sources to the report.

How do I update existing data sources to switch from the Dynamics Business Central connector and into OData Feeds in Power Query? I have many existing reports that has many applied steps that I will have to reconstruct from scratch if there is no such possible way to swap the source while preserving the existing steps.

    Hi everyone,

The Dynamics 365 Business Central connector in Power BI Desktop has stopped working recently.

When selecting Business Central as a data source, the connector fails immediately with:

DataFormat.Error: There were more columns in the result than expected.

This is happening before the Navigator opens, so it’s impossible to select tables.

Several users (and MVP posts) have confirmed this is a BC metadata change that Power BI Desktop and Service are rejecting.

Workarounds like OData v2/4 and custom API endpoints work, but the native connector is currently unusable.

    Questions:

    1. Can Microsoft confirm this is a known incident?
    2. Is there an ETA for a fix?

This is affecting multiple organizations and breaking standard reporting workflows.

    Thanks

    This problem is totally unacceptable!
How can the impact of the change not been tested properly before release into production environments?
It seems to have equally impacted both the most recent 27.1 version of BC, AND prior versions running on Microsoft cloud.

The PBI reports impacted (all of them!) all use the legacy Odata connections for data extraction-
However, the connections were set up using the PBI/BC connector- Regardless, the reports still fail.

When using the connector, even on a clean, new PBI report, it cannot even return a list of the available data endpoints.

the message "There were more columns in the result than expected" is returned.

This issue seems to be resolved as of a few hours ago by microsoft.

Unfortunately, now PBI service managers everywhere in organizations using BC data will have to restart all the paused refreshes that Microsoft compulsory stopped because of the repeated failures yesterday

    Happy clicking everyone!

I am encountering the same error as well. Could you please share an estimated timeline for when this issue will be resolved?

I am facing the same issue. Is it resolved yet? Is there any resolution for this?

I am still getting this issue. Cannot connect using the Online Service or Odata. Are there any updates on this?
