Lot Numbering

Hi

I have a scenario where I want to implement lot tracking for my finished goods but I want to have an expiration for those items based in months.  For example if the item was produced 24th Jan, then the expiration date will be six months shelf life which can be Jun 24th.  However, I realized that depending upon the month the product is made 6 months could actually be between 181 - 186 days since the amount of days in a month can be 30, 31 or 28 days.

Is there a way I could set up the expiration/shelf days to record in months instead of days?

Are we looking at a customization of the lot set up screen to accomplish this?  Any suggestion or advice on this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

    Lisa,

Thank you for posting your question to the forum. The only way in SL (standard functionality) is to set the expiration in INSetup. But the Shelf Life is calculated as Receipt Date + Shelf Life Days.

I understand that your question is on if there was a way to set it to monthly. Sadly there is not in standard SL. There is also not an easy way to customize this to make sure and manage the item in OM and IN. There are some 3rd party applications that have expiration settings outside of SL, but the ones I know of also calculate the Shelf Life by days, not months.

To help find a work around on this behavior, is to possibly set the days to 28 (least number of days in a month),   I do not know the lot number tracking needs, but if the lot numbers are setup to include the date in the lot number sequence, it might help the users use the correct lots. May also help in creating a custom message to prompt where the month criteria can be set in that compares the lot segment name (date).

I hope this helps. I also checked and having this option expire based on month is not listed as a future enhancement either.

    Thank you,

Thank you for the above response; sorry I did not get back to you earlier than today.

However, on reviewing your work around you suggested to have the lot number set up to include the date and to set a custom message to prompt on comparing the month criteria to the lot segment name or date.

For clarification, will you suggest a prompt while the item is being sold?  If so then I guess this will this entail a customization?

I am not sure I understand how the shelf days (expiry) operates in SL.  When that is set up either globally or on individual items is that setting just for information purposes?   Does the system at all stop the user from selling an item that has passed its shelf life?  Could you explain a bit how the system will operate normally when an expiration date is used in lot numbering for an item?

I would very much appreciate your further input on this issue.

    Regards
