Product names and categories in different user's languages

In a multilingual environment, the product names and procurement categories are not properly supported in languages other than the language in the system parameters. This makes it impossible to operate the system in this respect if we use a common product and main product file as well as a supply category. The system displays names in the system language regardless of the company language or the language of the user. This prevents proper operation - review of product files and lists, e.g. when entering requirements, orders, inquiries. Also, filtering by names in languages other than the system language does not work.

Have you encountered such an issue in implementation? Do you have any solution for that - support for product names and categories in the user's language?

Thanks for your replies

    Hi John

Did you do this change in a production environment? And if so what is your experience?

RE: Product names and categories in different user's languages

I want to come back to this declaration: "It was never designed to use the language of a company or user." We are doing upgrade AX2012R3 to D365 and also noticed that there's a difference in product translations.

Earlier in AX2012 it always took product translation based on company language. In D365 MS changed it to take from systemparameters without leaving any options OOB to switch back to legacy way.

In short - change needs to be made in  COC'ed InventTable.DefaultProductNameInSystemLanguage() to return translations based on company language as earlier, who doesn't want this new 'feature':

    Hi Katarzyna,

Your conclusion is correct. Development effort is required to get the best experience.

Instead of the search name, you can use product translations. Then you don't have to extend field lengths. Then on several forms, you can add a display method to display the product name also in the language of the user. This solution would enable support for more languages.

RE: Product names and categories in different user's languages

    Hello Zain,

Yes, in categories problem of languages is partly solved in standard owing to friendly name field and its translations. But it also needs some development as you cannot filtering by friendly names and is not visible everywhere it's needed - e.g. in document lines.

I think that there is no solution without development.

    Best regards,

    Katarzyna

    Hi Zain,

Have used the search name in similar situation but the not procurement categories. Your English-Arabic translation looks like a nice workaround.

Thanks for sharing with the community!

    Hi Katarzyna,

Yes that you have to do, but that can be achieved through minimum development. Moreover, for procurement categories have a 'Friendly Name' field. Which can be used for different language approach.

User can see the procurement category while selecting on the PR lines. as highlighted in the screenshot.

    Hi Zain,

Thank you for your answer. Yes, I was also thinking about such solution, but it also needs some customization like increasing the number of characters and adding this field to some reports and forms like Add products to purchase requisition etc. And still remains the problem for categories names.

    Best regards :)

    Hi Katarzyna,

We gave a workaround for a customer once. It needed the same thing, the users wanted to see the products in Arabic while the upper management were keen on English.

What we did as a workaround, entered the Arabic name in the product search name. This way the users pain area were dealt with and the management has no issues as well. Yet, we had to do customizations to display the search name where required over inventory reports & control document over the company.

Also the search name field is in default editable on the product tab.

    Warm Regards,

    Zain Mehmood.

RE: Product names and categories in different user's languages

    Hi Ludwig

My clients also always want to have consistent product catalog [product, material, trading goods, services]. You mention the consistency of numbers and names. And I agree regarding numbering, but not names. Names must be readable by workers. And it cannot be achieved if they don’t understand the language of the name. Number - even coding one - don’t give the full information about the product.

You asked what I would like to see in IC PO – I would like to see the product name I could read as the worker. And if company A needs “wheat”, in Polish company B I’d like to read “pszenica” ;)

It’s necessary in functionalities used by thousands of workers e.g. purchase requirements.

Besides information about the product name in lines of documents [PO, SO, purchase requisition etc.] is not such big problem as I can have proper information in Text field. Problem is the moment of entering lines of document, review of product lists and name of category in documents.

The most important for that post is a need of consistency of product catalogs for the customer which acts as a group in different countries and ability to work using one catalog, central processes [e.g. central purchase] and report the data.

    Kind regards,

    Katarzyna
