question mark in black diamond being displayed for special characters?

Hello - Some users are reporting an issue of a question mark in a black diamond being displayed for special characters when associating a contact to a request.

I opened a prod CRM browser instance and I opened a new request and associated a contact name with special characters. The contact name with special characters displayed as expected on the request.

Therefore, this issue appears to be a user/browser configuration issue. Is there a missing language pack or some other setting that users can fix when they encounter this issue? Or is the root cause due to some other reason?

I've seen this issue, but only very rarely. I've never been able to track down the root cause, but I've always suspected it was something to do with accented characters being imported from an external data source using the Data Import Wizard. Often data is formatted using Excel, which has a habit of not displaying special characters well. I suspect that when that data gets imported the result is the question mark in a black diamond phenomenon you have discovered.

Neil - it works in some user/browsers but not others.  Therefore, the issue appears to reflect a user/browser configuration issue as opposed to a corrupt data issue.  Do you agree?
