Bin type on Bins of Production Zone

Greetings to all of you.

Allow me to explain a case that brought up from a customer of mine.

We have a location with a directed pick-put away ON.The customer also has manufacturing.

In real life, the customer perform the below:

1)Store the raw materials on the raw material zone.
2) Every morning, the retrieve those raw material from the raw material zone and they transfer those raw materials to a silo which is located in the production zone. They stock those raw materials within this silo even if they wont need so much quantity of them for the daily productions.
3) By the time a production order is finished, they update the silo quantity by decreasing the quantity based on the amount that got consumed.

Let's try now to translate those operations in the system.

1) We need to have a bin of type put-away in the raw material zone.
2) We need to have a bin of type put away in the production zone, the silo basic.

All good for now,the raw materials are within the silo bin in the production zone.

The problem is that since we have directed pick & put-away enabled, i must perform a warehouse pick within the system in order to post a consumption.
But in reality, they do not perform any other warehouse movement. The raw materials are being consumed directly from the silo.

For the system, i must do a warehouse pick from the silo bin to a virtual, default consumption bin in order to register the consumption. But, ideally , i would like to avoid this step since its not aligned with the real operations that the customer does.

Assuming that i am not missing anything here up until now and i have understood BC correctly, can you advice me on how i can consume directly from the silo bin? Once more, keep in mind that the silo's are being replenished at the beginning of the day , so at first, they are basically put-away bins.

Thank you in advance for your time!

Have You looked into options to have the Silo not as a Bin, but as a separate Location code, without the Directed put/pick ?

    Hello,

Thanks for the detailed explanation — it’s a very clear real-world scenario.

In a Directed Pick and Put-away location, Business Central enforces strict warehouse processes, which is why you're required to perform a warehouse pick before posting consumption. This ensures traceability and aligns with system logic, but as you've noted, it doesn't always reflect real-life operations.

To consume directly from the silo bin without performing a warehouse pick, here are a few suggestions:

    1. Change the Bin Type: Consider setting the silo bin as a Fixed Bin for the production components. This allows the system to recognize it as the default bin for consumption.
    2. Use a Non-Directed Location: If the silo is the only bin involved in production consumption, you might consider using a non-directed location for production purposes, or splitting the location into two — one directed for storage, one non-directed for production.
    3. Customize the Process: If changing the location setup isn't feasible, a customization or extension could allow bypassing the warehouse pick step, especially if the silo bin is always the source.
    4. Use Inventory Movement: As a workaround, you could automate a warehouse movement from the silo to a consumption bin via Power Automate or a simple AL script, triggered by production order release.

Let me know if this helps or if you'd like to explore a tailored solution for your customer’s workflow.
