How do you change an Inventory item to a kit?

We have a large number of items that we were purchasing from a single source.  Now we have different vendors for the component items.  I do not want to change the part numbers, but I need to change the way the items ore listed in the system. How do you change an Inventory item to a kit?

You can't thru the front end.  You can only change a Sales Item to Discontinued.  But, you could make the change in the IV00101 table.  Change the ITEMTYPE to 3.  Just make sure you don't have any quantity on hand or on any open POs, SOs, or transactions and that the items are not lot or serial tracked.

Also, test in a test database first to verify there are no issues from making the change in the tables, i.e., run a bunch of transactions on one of the items.

Best way is to create a new item for the kit.

Do you have to create a new part number when you create a new item?

Here is where my problem occurs. Our customers have thousands catalogs and cut sheets. I have many contracts were it has taken 5+ years to get all of our main part number sequences loaded into their databases. Starting with new part numbers, while not out of the question, will cost the company a lot of money. I knew the part number change was an option. I was just hoping for a better option.

Unless I am missing something, if you were sourcing your components from one vendor, and now carry multiple vendors for the same part number, why can't you setup additional vendors for each part number and setup substitutes? When you are selling a kit and there isn't enough quantities for a specific component, you are still able to pull a substitute item.

Mariano is close.  You don't need extra vendors.

Set the current items to allow substitutes.

    Create new Kit items.

Link an existing item to a kit

When customer orders part ABC-123 deliver the substitue ABC-123-K (the kit item)

The only problem is if you are dealing with dumb buyers like governments where if a=b and they order a they won't pay for b.

Of course, you could just add a period to the part number and most people will not notice the difference between ABC and ABC.
