Import new data to field of existing contact record

In other CRM products I have always been able to update a contact record with new data by importing just that single field using a match field such as first and last name.  I can't figure out how to do this in CRM 4.0.  The import tool appears to update all the fields used in the data map - and you must include required fields in the data map.  There is no match field option which would tell the import which record to udpate.  Is there another way to accomplish this task?  I want to update a Primary Industry field on each Contact record.  I have exported the data and have a .csv file ready to import which includes all the match fields as well as the new information field.  Thank you.

    Hi nicim,

There is a bulk update tool available on codeplex

    http://mscrmbulkupdatetool.codeplex.com/

I have not been able to review this yet.

a small part of the problem is the comma separated value file uses carriage returns - the snafu being the "extra" invisible space(s) that you don't see - but always there - some programs cannot skip over it - and catch the exception - regards, barb ;-j

Thanks, but that actually had nothing to do with it.  The problem was that Microsoft had "turned off" the update feature when it was found that it couldn't handle foreign characters.  Since I would never use foreign characters, I was able to locate a post on how to turn it back on by going into the registry of the product.  The manuals kept showing me it was possible - but the screens didn't look like the manuals.....sure enuf it was Microsoft all along.
