Renaming Item codes

Hi All

We have a lot of item codes that are not currently used and we want to reuse the old codes (which contain transactions) by renaming the codes.  has anyone done this and experienced any issues? or is there a better way to manage archiving of old codes so item search screens and functions are efficient?

    Hi Samantha 

    We have done a few of those and had no issue at changing the code (mainly to define the existing item code better). But, one time that we used the new code for a new item we ran to some issues:

    1) Our reporting for that item was wrong because of previous history. Of course this is internal issue and you may have a way to communicate with your team. 

    2) in the case of RA beside knowing exact date of switching the code we had no other way to tell if this was an old or new part. 

    Since then we decided to not use the method anymore, For now we use the following app that help us to clean our list but still keep the history.

    You can safely rename item no. It will rename all related tables automatically as well.
