Default Power BI report currency to USD instead of local currency

ReportReport

Hi everyone,
I’m currently working with Power BI reports that are deployed across different regions. By default, the reports pick up the user’s local system currency or region settings. However, I want to force all currency values to display in USD ($) regardless of the user's locale.

My question:

  • Is there a way to set USD as the default currency for the entire report or dataset?
  • Can this be controlled via Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, or through DAX formatting?
  • Are there any best practices for handling currency conversion and display in multinational reports?
Any guidance or examples would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Jana

    Hi, good day

Select the [Sales Amount] field, go to the Modeling pane in Power BI, and in the format, choose Currency ($).

    Best Regards
    Gerardo

    Hi Jana,

Great question! To ensure your Power BI reports consistently display currency in USD ($) regardless of the user's locale, here are a few approaches you can consider:

    1. DAX Formatting: You can use DAX to format your currency fields explicitly in USD. For example

    FORMAT([Amount], "$#,##0.00")

    1. This forces the display to USD formatting, but note that it doesn't handle currency conversion—only formatting.

    2. Currency Conversion Table: If your data includes multiple currencies, it's best practice to create a currency conversion table with exchange rates and apply the conversion in your data model. You can then calculate and display all values in USD.

    3. Power BI Desktop Settings: While Power BI Desktop respects the system locale, you can override this by setting the model culture in the report settings. However, this affects formatting, not conversion.

    4. Power BI Service: The service also respects the browser or system locale. To maintain consistency, it's best to handle formatting and conversion within the report itself using DAX and data modeling.

    5. Best Practice: Always separate raw values from converted values and clearly label them. This helps avoid confusion and ensures transparency in multinational reports.

Let me know if this helps!

    Hello,

The recommendation would be to perform the necessary conversion or adjustment (DAX) in Power BI Desktop to verify and validate the currencies and exchange rates that have been used.

As primary data, you should always look at the date of entry, currency, and amount of each transaction.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Andrés
