In Place Windows Server OS Upgrade on CRM Full Server

The server admin team is wanting to update the OS of my CRM full server VM from 2012 to 2016 and the in place upgrade is making me nervous.

Any one have experience with this?  Anything to watch or recommendations?

Should I push back and ask for a new VM to deploy a second CRM server on for the deployment and then decommission the old server?  My preferred approach.

Thanks!
