Copy CRM production data to Test environment : what to leave out?

Hi all,

I was looking for a procedure that describes how to move production data to a test environment. I found the post below that contains usefull information:

https://community.dynamics.com/crm/f/117/t/161116

My question is does anyone have a checklist of 'items' that by definition should not be moved from the production environment to the test environment since these are environment specific?

Regards,

Amber

Easiest way to move production data to test is  importing the production database into test crm deployment. In order to do this you have to follwo below steps

1.Take full backup of production crm organization database ( organization_MSCRM).

2.Restore this backup on the test crm deployment sql server .

3.Using Test crm server CRM DEployment manager import the organization from the restored database from the production.

If you already have database with same name that you are trying to restore rename and restore it.

You can find same info with screen shot here

    Hi Amber,

To address your question, I don't think there's a real checklist of data to exclude from your migration that will affect CRM, but I think you want to be aware of any sensitive data that you don't want in multiple environments. When I redeploy data from production to a test server, I always wipe out email addresses or generate dummy emails, same thing with phone numbers.

Hope this helps! If so I'd appreciate if you'd mark this as a Verified answer.

    Thanks,

     Aiden

You can also try this xrm tool.  marketplace.bevercrm.com/.../DataMigrationUsingFetchXml

    Here are the steps:

    1. In the source instance go to advanced find (Microsoft removed it from UCI, but still available in "Advanced Settings"), specify columns, and filter criteria of the entity which data should be migrated.

    2. Download the fetchXml file from the advanced find.

    3. Add fetchXml file in the XrmToolBox control.

    4. Click "Transfer Data".

It also supports searching by name instead of searching by id for lookup fields.
