GP fresh install Windows7 32 bit operating system

Posted on by 4,887

Doing a fresh install of GP workstation on a Windows7 32 bit install.

I've done lots of client installs and have never had this issue.

I launch utilities and get this message:

"a previous version of microsoft dynamics GP has been detected - you can not upgrade your Dynamics databse at this time (users are in system).

I checked the dex.ini file and confirmed that the client workstation is on 10.00.1061 (SP2)

I checked the db_upgrade table (in Dynamics database) is at same version for all companies and product ids.

Notes: install was done as administrator from original install dvd. I did not trust copying install folders from other network machines because no other machines are Windows7 (they are all XP machines).

ODBC is working fine (obviously).

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing several times.....

Any assistance is appreciated.......

    Hi Bron.

A Error log file should have been created on the workstation.

This will tell you exactly where and what prodduct the error occurred.

Many times it is because of a Third Party software or Extender from EOne products and not that of GP.

    Hi Bron,

Have you compared the DYNAMICS.SET files from both client installation ? you might have selected one or more optional modules that were not part of your server installation of GP, thus when starting the first time your new client, GP claims that it cannot identify properly all the versions related to the modules from the new client vs. the server installed ones.

Not only should the number of module match in the .SET file, but also should the dictionary # be the same... Your source of installation should of course be the same, or at least should you make sure the client was installed with the latest SP equal to what your server is.

Hope this helps for the next client installation. With GP10 / 2010, if you have several clients to deploy, I would suggest to use the package creation wizard that will build a standard installation kit for your clients, ensuring that all the clients gets the same configuration and allowing you to have a (quite) zero-touch deployement.

    Best regards,
    Beat

    Update................

I ended up copying an install folder from the XP workstation on to the Windows7 workstation and it worked (just like the good old days.....).

I can't explain why the original install didn't work.........

    Regards,

    BT
