Change Account Structure

(0) ShareShare

Posted on by 12

We are considering a change to the account structure for one of our clients and I am pretty sure we have the 'account format space' to do this.

Account Format is

X-XX-XXX-XXXX-XXX

With Characters (max) 20 - (used) 13

With Segment (max) 6 - (used) 5

Each Segment is formatted (dynamics..sy00300) 4 per segment

Questions

If I were to expand the first segment to 2 characters, I am assuming that the system will put the space 'behind' the existing character.  Therefore if we want 01, rather than 1( ) then we would have to "move" all the accounts from the 1( ) to 01?

If we were to simple start to use 10, 11 etc would that work?  Or would the sort order for that Segment then be 1, 10, 11 etc rather than counting 1,2,3, etc.?

Thanks for you time and consideration.

    Bill,

Your assumption is correct. You will be rewarded with a space after your initial character by expanding the segment from 1 to 2. I would suggest using PSTL tools to update the segments after you make the change.  I have done just this in numerous instances. You can change 1 to 01 or 10 as you desire.

    Thanks,

If I do not change the 1( ) to 01 will it sort wrong?

Reason I ask, is that currently there are only 4 or 5 of the possible 9 used, and if we don't change them then the client saves consulting time, but, at what processing cost?

    Your thoughts?

Follow up to my own question

I can do this in a TEST company without having to move to a whole new TEST environment - correct?

I do want to test of course, but a simple as possible, so a TEST company on the same DYNAMICS database as the PRODUCTION database is or is not a problem?

    Bill,

I would strongly recommend testing/modeling these changes in a test environment.  I don't think I can accurately answer your question on sorting...  This is going to require a test.  Here is an example of two columns in Excel with one being sorted as numbers and the other sorted as text; same numbers, very different results.

    #s Text

    1 1

    3 10

    7 100

    10 101

    11 11

    100 3

    101 7

So, you dont think a NEW TEST company would be enough to test this.  You would create another 'separate' operational Dynamics installation for this test?

Just asking and keeping budget in mind

By the way, that is exactly what I figured would happen with the numbers, and I was looking for a confirmation on that  - thanks for that confirmation.

Sorry for the confusion - in this instance, your account structure is large enough to accommodate your changes, so you can create a test company, and make these changes there, including running PSTL.  I believe a test company will serve fine.
