Batch production orders for single sales line

Hi everyone,

In our business, we work by batches, i.e.  I can produce in a batch of 25.  Our clients may then order 100 of that item, and we will then need 4 production orders.  Under Item > Planning, I used the route as either Product or Lot-fot-lot, I set my maximum quantity to 25, but when I try to create a production order from my sales order, whether Item or Project based, I only ever get 1 production order created for the full sales value.  Can anyone help please?
I have the same question (0)

Which D365 product are you using? The D365 brand covers quite a few things, such as Finance and Operations, Business Central or Customer Engagement.

Thanks for replying!  We are using Business Central.  We are also using the Manufacturing module.

As far as I know, this can only be done by customization. You can try to contact local partners to discuss specific needs.

Hopefully other users can give you better suggestions.

    Thanks.

You need to use the Planning Worksheet to get the system to honor the Planning Parameters.  You have the correct process, setting the Max. Qty to 25 will limit the Production Orders to 25 units.  You may want to set a Min Qty or Order Modifier as well to ensure you don't have a Production Order for 1 because someone ordered 101 instead of 100.

Lot-for-Lot planning will ensure you are meeting your demand, but you could also consider either of the Stock Policies (Fixed or Max) for this scenario as well.

P.S. Ensure your Manufacturing Policy is "Make-to-Stock" as well.

    Hello,

Yes I do agree with Ben Baxter's explanation, make sure that the Manufacturing Policy on the item card is set to Make-to-Stock, as this setting allows the Planning Worksheet to properly split demand into multiple production orders based on your Maximum Order Quantity of 25.

Also, setting a Minimum Order Quantity or Order Modifier can help prevent creating production orders for very small leftover quantities. Using the Planning Worksheet with these parameters will help you to respects your batch size and creates multiple production orders as needed for large sales orders.

Hope this configuration will solve your query!

Thank you Ben and Mansi.  Stopped in my tracks!  I understand we cannot use make to stock based on our business model, so it seems we will not be able to use the batch production order functionality.   But really appreciate the help!

Why do you think you can't you use "Make-to-Stock" policy?

This setting does not prevent you from doing order-based planning, it simply ensures the planning parameters are respected.  I wouldn't give up on Planning based on the name of the policy, you can still use it as defined in your question.

Perhaps you should continue this conversation with your partner, and hopefully they can demonstrate how this would operate for your business.

    Hi Ben,

Thanks.   We have decided to go that route.   It makes it much simpler!
