When attempting to merge two contact records I get a "Duplicate Record" error saying "A record with these values already exists. A duplicate record cannot be created. Select one or more unique values and try again."
Merging records is supposed to be a means of dealing with duplicates so the error does not make sense. Both records are active and no inactive records exist with the same email, etc.
I have even tried editing one of the records so that it is not detected as a duplicate. I still get the error.
Up to now I have had the error on one other pair of records when attempting to merge, other records merge successfully with no obvious differences.
I have only experienced the issue after the v9 upgrade but I cant be sure that's the cause.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is this a bug or am I missing something. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you find a solution for this? We just upgraded to 365 on-premise V9 and is having the same problem.
Thanks

Thanks, this is useful and I think the issue is related to activities assoicated with the two records.
I tried creating two new records and then merged each of the offending contact records with a new record first, making the new record as master but selecting all the data from the original record. These records merged OK but then when you finally try to merge the final two records together you get the same duplicate error. so rather than it being related to the Contact record itself it seems to be one or more of the activites (whch get re-assigned at merge) that are casuing the issue.
My gut feeling is that its related to email traking via the Outlook plugin but I have not yet proved or resolved this as yet.
I have searched few things found few hints related to your problem.
There are three situations when duplicates may be found:
When a record is created or updated.
When you're using Dynamics 365 for Outlook and you go from offline to online.
When you import data using the Import Data wizard.
Duplicates aren't detected when you merge records, convert a lead, save an activity as completed, or change the status of a record, such as activating or reactivating a record.
following docs link provide more information.

please check there are no plugins or workflow trigger on Merge message may be that's a reasons you got duplicate record error.
or check duplicate detection rule of contact entity.
Thanks for your reply.
I tried assigning both records to my ownership before attempting to merge the records.. My account is administrator level and I still get the same issue.
I think this is related to security roles of user.look into following thread
