Moving user to a terminal server

Hello,

Our environment started with just a single user for a year.  GP installed on a user workstation, also GP & database installed on a server.  Recently we have built a terminal server for 2 additional users.

We plan to have the original user move to the terminal server environment.  Is there anything I should be aware of?  So far I noticed the notes (OLEPath) feature has to be on a share location so others can access.

We are on GP 2010 (SP3).

Thanks in advance.

TT

RE: Moving user to a terminal server

Lets say if I were to change the form dictionary location, the following lines on the files are changed below.  Please confirm.  Thanks.

    Dex.ini

    FormDictionaryPath=Z:\Data\

    Dynamics.set

    Dynamics Online Services

    Windows

    :C:Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Dynamics/GP2010/Dynamics.dic

    :Z\Data\FORMS.DIC

    :C:Program Files (x86)/Microsoft

Ian, I do notice when we used the mapped drive for the OLEPath, it created the company name.

I typically have a share setup and have the UNC path in the Dynamics.set and Dex.ini files; they are all happy with using the UNC. However, one limitation worth mentioning OLE notes will only create a folder for a company automatically if the Dex.ini file has a path using a drive letter and not when it is setup using the UNC path.

If I am centralising an already existing system I would copy the files from one of the clients to the central share and point all clients at the central share.

I haven't looked at the user workstation in a few weeks now.  If I locate the dictionary stuff in the directory, would I be able to move them to the share location (db1 server)?

Also, how would I tell the user to test if for the stuff with dictionaries?

Currently, I have any new users logging into TS1 (terminal server).  The db1 server is where the GP database and share location sit.

For the OLEPath, I was able to use the mapped drive on the Dex.ini file, so I assumed the dictionaries work with mapped drive too.

    Thanks,

As Béat says, check your dictionary locations for the forms and reports as you may want them shared rather than separately on each client.

You may also want to have the Letters folder shared (path in Dex.ini) if you are using the Letter Writing Assistant.

    Hi,

There is no real attention that you need to consider, except that you should have a shared folder on the GP server where the application is installed and where also your shared dictionaries for the customized forms & reports should be accessible. This folder need to be accessible in RW mode for the users... On your TS, you'll then configure your launch file DYNAMICS.SET to point to the network URL where your GP shared folder is located..  (i.e. \\DYNAMICSGP\GP\Data\Forms.dic )

On my server, the program folder for the GP installation is shared as "GP" on the network, this way all the subfolders are also accessible in RW mode, including the OLE Notes.

One other thing that you can do, is to use a batch file to start the GP client from the TS in order to use an individual DEX.ini file instead of a common setup file for all the users.
