Server-side synchronization Exchange on premise and CRM 2013 on premise

Hi, Can someone please share some experience about configure Server Side synchronization? We are in on-premise environment and using AD for single sign on, new to Server-side synchronization. We have plan to upgrade to Dynamics 365 online next year. 

1. What kind of work needs to be done on Exchange server side? 

2. For setting Exchange email server profile, is there anything special we need to be aware of? Credentials?
