What happens if I assign a resource type to an operation

For example:

I create a Route, then I assign an Operation to that Route. Then under the "Resource Requirement" tab of the Operation Grid, I add a "resource type" and select Machine.

My guess is that, this gives D365 the freedom to choose ANY resource type "machine" to perform said operation.

A) Is that correct?

B) If that is correct, has anyone seen a business case in which this was used?

Thanks for any help!

    Hi H_Incandenza,

Resources are the company’s total working resources. They can be anything that is used for the creation, production, or delivery of a good and/or service over and beyond the materials consumed in the process. Resources can be of different types, including machines, tools, people, vendors, or locations.

Resources are created in the Organization administration module. They are used in production along with the calendar to manage the overall capacity of a company's equipment and resources. Each resource can be associated with a resource group, and one or multiple resources can exist in any given resource group.

    Judy,

    Thank you for your reply!

That all makes sense. I understand all the definitions, the types of resources, etc.

What I don't understand is D365's behavior if I choose to directly add a "resource type" to my operation.

E.g., if I add a resource requirement, "resource type" and then select machine, what will happen when I go to scheduling? Will D365 simply choose any resource with type "machine" based on available capacity or priority?

And if that's the case, have you ever seen someone use this option as opposed to using a resource / resource group / capability?

It seems like something that wouldn't have many use cases.

    Thanks again!
