Converting Unmanaged solution to Managed

Hi All,

I have a requirement to convert our unmanaged solution to managed. Currently we have a production environment which has unmanaged solution. The unmanged solution has number of customizations to the entities (e.g.: lead, opportunity, etc). Going forward we want to change the approach and use managed solutions.

What approach should I follow? How can we make sure that we successfully import a managed solution for the entities that are already customized in production as unmanaged?

Thanks,

Swaroop

You cant directly convert an unmanaged solution to a managed solution. You need to export the unmanaged solution as 'Managed' and then import it.

Below is a link on the best practices for using managed and unmanaged solutions. Hope this helps.

    Hi Karth,

Thanks for your response. I have some questions.

You cant directly convert an unmanaged solution to a managed solution.

-> Should I do it on all the environments?

You need to export the unmanaged solution as 'Managed' and then import it.

-> I have many customizations on my organization. Should I export all my customizations as one managed solution? And should I import it on CRM vanilla org (default org) or our existing org on other environment?

    Thanks,

    Swaroop

Managed solution has one limitation (or should I call it a feature?) - once you have imported a solution as 'Managed', you cannot export it. So, even if you make additional configurations on the managed solution, you will not be able to export it. You have to consider this for your design purpose. Take a backup of your existing customizations on your Dev Server, and then export the solution as 'Managed'.

    Hi Karth,

Is it a good idea to export all the customizations (for all CRM entities) as 1 managed solution and apply it to the Prod environment?

And Is this the only way to convert unmanaged solution to managed? I mean is there a way to do it thru SDK or other methods?

    Thanks,

    Swaroop

Hello, we have a similar need to convert an unmanaged solution in production environment to managed. However it fails when i tried to import the same solution exported as managed. it complaints about lot of missing components which are already part of my managed solution. Any help would be highly appreciated.

I haven't tried this but in theory you could try the reverse of this blog?

    Hello Swaroop.

NEVER do this on your development system. When you import all your solutions managed, you can't export them for test and prod environment. On Dev your customizations and programmings are unmanaged, than export them MANAGED for Test and Prod.

    Kind regards,

    Karsten
