Management Reporter 2012 Data Mart vs. Legacy Data

Hello,

I had a quick question to see if anyone else had this issue. First, we are on Dynamics GP 2013 (12.00.1570).

A quick summary of our setup. We installed MR 2012 before CU8 came out to fix currency translations. So we have all of our reports pointing to the GP Legacy instead of just using the Data Mart. I read recently that MS is doing away with the support of GP Legacy in either CU10 or CU11. While I do see this as a good thing, we ran into one small problem while preparing for this coming change. We are currently on CU9, FYI.

We have 11 Dynamics GP databases and every single one of them match from GP Legacy to Data Mart financials in the reports, except one. Why is there always one?? : ) I guess that's better than all of them!

We have one company database that is off for only the month of April and not only that, but it's only off on just one of our natural segment accounts (3 accounts in total but they all share the natural segment). It took our report designer a little while to figure that out but just that one set of accounts is off out of all 11 companies and for the last 6 months of financial data she ran.

I'm not sure where to go from here as to why the data in the Data Mart doesn't match the data in the GP Legacy side of things. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thank you,

John Olley

    Hi John,

Just to make sure I'm following you...one company out of 11 does not display the correct balances for April only and only for one main account.  This happened after you switched from Legacy to Data Mart.  Is that correct?

You mentioned currency translation, does this report or this account use currency translation?  If it does, is it using an average rate?  There is an issue with the data mart and retained earnings.  So if this account is a retained earnings account, there are some things to check for that.  You can't post directly to retained earnings and it must be assigned to the default RE category (account category 27).

If you are using Analytical Accounting, you'll want to go through KB 2910626.  There are a number of scripts in the article you'll want to run through, to check for bad AA data.  You usually won't notice it in GP, but the bad data will show up in MR reports.  If you do use AA and the scripts find bad records, you'll want to open a support case with the GP AA team to get the data fixed.

Yes, Greg. You are correct. Only one company out of 11 does not display the correct balances for April and only for one main account. Also correct that GP Legacy data is correct and data mart data is not (for this account in this company). When I setup MR 2012, I setup both GP Legacy and Data Mart at the same time. The Data Mart has been rebuilt since then, very recently actually. Funny thing is, the one company that we have currency translations setup in GP, worked 100% great! Both GP Legacy and Data Mart matched 100% in that company.

Good question. I failed to mention that in my original post.

You mentioned currency translation, does this report or this account use currency translation?

No, this company does not use currency translation. We also do not use AA.

    Thanks for the help!

    John,

I did experience one GL transaction that would not sync to the Data Mart. We finally had to delete the transaction in SQL, re-post the entry, Financial-Reconcile, and re-build the Data Mart. We never figured out why. I looked at every column in GL20000.

So after your experience with Management Reporter on Dynamics GP, which would you recommend using the Data Mart or Legacy ?

In my experience don't use data mart and don't use analytical accounting. I don't think Dynamics GP can handle it. Unless you absolutely have to and there's no other way to achieve what you need - don't use AA. It had given us pain & grief through integration and reporting. It's better to have a COA of 2 million rows than to use AA. The "legacy" connection is a legend and it can do what you need - I am yet to witness a situation in which Data Mart delivers.

Once MR got past CU 12 none of our clients have had any issues. Perhaps rebuild the data mart every now and then but not very often. I will be honest and say we have many clients using BI 360 for its Excel interface. But even that product has their data warehouse. The data warehouse or data mart greatly speeds up the production of financial reports. When it comes to AA we have learned that the fewer dimensions the better. Once AA gets corrupted it is nearly impossible to correct.
