import solution hanging?

Hello - I'm trying to import a solution into a CRM website. I've triggered the import process and the "Import Customizations" dialog says "Importing customizations. Please wait for the operation to complete...."

The progress bar on the dialog doesn't show any green bars and the import has been running for over 10 minutes.  Is it safe to go ahead and kill the import process?

Is there a certain amount of time after which you normally kill the import process when no green bars have displayed in the progress bar?  How often do you encounter this issue?

It sounds as though you are running an old CRM 4.0 organization. As far as I can remmeber, several update rollups for CRM 4.0 included improvements to the performance of the customization import process. You might want to check which UR you have installed.

Also worth checking the size of your import file. Some large customization sets can take a long time to install.

It's CRM 2011 and the file size is 71K.  How long would you normally expect this import process to take?

Are there any other steps I should take before the import process to help it perform more quickly on a regular basis?

After what amount of time should I kill the process if no green bars have displayed on the progress bar?

    Does the solution contain Plugins?

    Are you a deployment administrator?

Hi Please run the stored procedure sp_who2 while importing the solution and see into the Blocked By Colum for any blocking sessions if there is any at the same time

    Thanks,

    Mohammad

    Hi,

This does happen, and sometimes the solution is being imported, but very slowly. If you close the dialog and the import is in progress, it will still carry on in the background.

I did a blog post on how to monitor progress if you are using On Prem - www.develop1.net/.../Un-responsive-Import-Solution-Dialog.aspx

I don't know why, but managed solutions quite often don't show a progress bar at all. You do need to make sure that your Async Server is running as well.

How did you get on with this one? Did you find the issue?

Hi Scott - I posted this at my last contract.  I think the solution always completed successfully, it was just a matter of waiting.  I think the worst case solution import time was about 15 minutes.  Not sure why it took so long sometimes, but was just a matter of waiting....

I have seen this on CRM 2011 as well. When it happens I usually just close the import and try again. Also if you are having issues publishing large solutions you might want to try publishing parts of the solutions. For example first the entities then the web ressources. The end it off with a publish all. That usually works.
