Convert from unmanaged to managed solution

Hi,

I want to deploy the solution as managed solution, earlier it was installed as unmanaged.

I am getting an error that I cannot install the same version of unmanaged solution to managed.

Second, I have js file that is different in QA and production.

So if I install the solution as managed then Can I edit the JS file in the managed solution in the Production.

Thanks

    Hi Together,

@Alex: I made several tests and sadly its not possible to convert unmanaged components :-(

We have the situation, that our old service partner developed unmanaged with two instances (test -> unmanaged; prod -> unmanaged) and we are going to work managed with three instances (develop -> unmanaged; test -> managed; prod -> managed).

If you manage the environment and has a ongoing release plan. Stick with unmanaged solution as that is giving more flexibility.

Don't think managed is good, unless you are releasing a product in which all the components are tightly controlled.

    >Whether can edit a component in managed solution: it depends on the property you set for the component, whether is it customizable.

    Hi Jyadav,

You should be able to install the solution without removing the components. Not sure what the error is, but you might just need to delete that unmanaged solution from production first - not the components, just the solution itself(if it's complaining about the same version)

On a side note.. are you sure you need it? If you ever decide to restore your sandbox from production backup, for example, you will have a managed solution there, and that can be a bigger problem. Somebody was looking for a solution to that problem just the other day here, and there is no simple answer.

RE: Convert from unmanaged to managed solution

    Hi Jyadav,

You can delete the components for Unmanaged solution and then try installing the managed solution.

Note: Before deleting the components from Production instance, take the backup of that solution. So that if anythings goes wrong then have backup to restore them.

    And regarding the JS file,

Yes, you can edit the JS files from Default Solution.
