GP 2013 R2 and which version of Visual Studio

I am slapping together a fresh image to be used as a development machine for GP 2013 R2. Given that VS 2010 was the last version that allowed you to install only the development language of your choice I am leaning in that direction. However, does it matter which version of Visual Studio you use? Will the VS Toolkit for GP 2013 R2 work just as well with VS 2010 as it will with VS 2012 or VS 2013?

    Hi Richard,

I now use VS 2013 for all new GP 2013 development projects.  Seems to work just fine, and I like some of the small auto-complete improvements in VS 2013.

But check out Mariano's post with instructions on getting the VS Tools templates setup for VS 2013.

The only potential issue I'm aware of with leaving VS 2010 would be if you rely on the Visual Studio "Setup" projects.  In VS 2012, they dropped the MSI / Windows installer option.  There was an outcry, so they supposedly added some replacement functionality with VS 2013--but I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know if / how it works.

Yes, I saw that rather ugly discussion in that blog. One can only hope the powers that be at Microsoft will take pity on us poor souls down here in the real world. If Visual Studio 2013 is good enough for both you and Mariano, who am I to argue? Any idea when Visual Studio 2014 will be shipping?

    Hi Richard,

The process to get VS 2013 setup is very simple--just follow Mariano's directions step by step and you should be done in a few minutes.

I generally try and avoid the latest version of Visual Studio, since I rarely used any of the latest features or .NET enhancements.  However, VS 2012 / 2013 and .NET 4+ have some significant new features related to developing RESTful web services with the MVC architecture and parsing JSON data, so I opted to move to VS 2013 and .NET 4.5.

I have since done a few projects with VS 2013 and .NET 4.5 and they have worked fine.  The only caveat is that if you use GPConnNet, you will run into the .NET 2.0 legacy runtime message, but that is easy to work around.

As for VS 2014 / 2015, it looks like it is in CTP right now, but I won't be rushing to try it any time soon.

Steve, all of my VS applications use GpConnNet.dll. What is the work around for the .NET 2.0 legacy runtime message?

    Hi Richard,

If you use .NET 4 or higher and reference a .NET 2.0 assembly, such as GPConnNet, you will usually get this message:

Mixed mode assembly is built against version ‘v2.0.50727′ of the runtime

If you have developed an EXE, the fix is to add a parameter to your .exe.config file.

If you are developing a GP AddIn DLL, you can modify the Dynamics.exe.config file.

    <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true">

Warning!  of late, the "fix" du jour is for the consultants to rename the dynamics.exe.config to fix various issues within GP, (you know, like the xml list issue or some addins like hr after removing hr).  The correct fix is to fix up the config, but you know how well that trickles down to the on-site techs.

Anyway, when they rename, then all of a sudden your stuff stops working.  I spent hours debugging, before I noticed the config file was renamed.  Hope someone else gets the benefit of this warning.
