Inactive records detected as duplicate during import

I've just run a few imports (contacts) and some of the records failed because a duplicate record for the parent account was found. Looking into it, these records were duplicates but were merged during clean up so there is one active and one inactive record. Surely the CRM should only pick up the active records? Or am I missing something?

Duplicate Reference is something else Makeer it means that  the Lookup Reference Name which is provided in sheet is duplicate in same entity.

For Example: You have given Reference Name as "Shahzeb" and Entity has 2 or more records with "Shahzeb" name.

RE: Inactive records detected as duplicate during import

    Hi Jason,

I am trying to follow solution that you have provided, but it seem to be not working in my case. Here is my situation

I wanted to import data for ProtoChildEntity which has Lookup to ProtoParentEntity

ProtoChildEntity CSV has value for ProtoParentEntity as "P000001" and there are 2 CRM records for "P000001" in ProtoParentEntity, one active and one inactive

Now I have tried creating duplicate detection rules on ProtoChildEntity and ProtoParentEntity but Import still fails with error " A duplicate lookup reference was found"

Could you please suggest some troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue?

    Appreciate your help

RE: Inactive records detected as duplicate during import

    Hello Chris, Jason.

Was this really the solution? (I'm using CRM 2015 Online)

I have the same situation and it still shows me the same "A duplicate lookup reference was found." error.

My situation is, just in case I misunderstood your scenario Chris:

    - I'm importing an entity X with a lookup to the Contact entity

    - I have two contact records with the same fullname, one active and one inactive

    - I did what Jason suggested however it's not fixed

    Any thoughts?

I'm going to do a workaround to make it work now that I need it, but it would be good if I find out the easiest solution for the next time :)

Thanks and looking forward to your comments,

    Ale

RE: Inactive records detected as duplicate during import

During the import process, if you checked the option to not allow duplicates - CRM uses any Duplicate Detection rules you have in place to handle this. in the Duplicate Detection rule itself, there is an option to "Exclude inactive matching records". Checking this option should ignore inactive records.
