Importing Solutions - Import Options - Upgrade Solution Actions - Should I check the "Stage for upgrade" when importing an update to a solution?

When importing a solution that will update an existing solution, I'm not sure if I should choose to "Stage for upgrade" or not. I don't know what it does, could anyone tell what this option does.
