Long time to populate Add Items list

Our database contains about 150,000 items. One of our suppliers supplies 225 of these items. If I go to the 'Items Supplied' tab for that supplier, the list comes up immediately. Can anyone explain why, when I do 'Add Items' when preparing a Purchase Order for that supplier, it takes 18 seconds to show the list?

Thanks for the update! I will keep playing around to see if I find a solution. If I ever do, I will post! Thanks again

    Hi Dan

No, the issue has never been resolved. It is a design problem in RMS.

We recently had a newer release of RMS (2.0.166), but that's still the same. I think it's just that RMS is not the product for such a large range of items as ours, but it should cope easily with your 30,000.

Our customary practice now is to set 'Add Items' going when we want to create an Order and go and get a coffee; by the time we're back, the list will probably have been loaded!

    Regards

    Dick

Where you ever able to fix this issue? We have the exact same problem with only 30,000 items. I know this is a 2 year old thread but i am running out of luck, in desperate search to find a solution. Thanks

Have you tried copying the data to the local machine and see if the problem still exists, maybe a networking issue.

Tell us more about your setup.  What version of RMS and SQL?

Have you installed fix for RMS and SQL KB961451 support.microsoft.com/.../961451 on all XP/Vista/Windows Server 2003/2008 machines?

Re: Long time to populate Add Items list

Thanks Jeff but we have 2Gb on all machines and I have 4Gb. Only running XP, so not all used, but should be enough.

The puzzling thing has always been the obviously different underlying SQL between Items in the Supplier properties and the list available for a Purchase Order.

A further puzzle is that the wait time for populating the availability list steadily increases the number of times a PO is prepared. The initial 18 secs can extend into minutes on a busy day and then a reload will reset it to 18 secs. This effect has been slightly improved with the latest release, but is still a problem.

    Regards

    Dick,

Maybe add some more RAM to both the Server and POS machines.  We reccommend 2 gig as a minimum.

Re: Long time to populate Add Items list

    Hi Keith

We are only a single store, so Headquarters mode is not relevant.

The 'Show previously defined Item SubDescriptions' is already unchecked and 'Hide details by default' (I assume that's the single store equivalent) is already checked.

In case it's of interest to readers, this problem existed when we first got the system 5 years ago. However, at that time, the time taken to load 'Add Items' increased every time it was done (until Store Ops was reloaded). Now, with the latest version, it remains constant at 18 seconds.

You could try modifying the following settings in Headquarters Manager under File | Configuration | Options.

Disable "Display list of previously-defined Item Sub Descriptions"

Enable "Hide details in PO Planner and Inventory Transfer Worksheets by default."

These options are also in Store Operations Manager under File | Configuration | Options and then in the Item Options and Purchase Order Options folders.

Re: Long time to populate Add Items list

    Thanks for your response.

    1. I would think that indexing must already be done, since other queries of Items against Supplier are very fast. It's only 'Add Items' that is slow. I assume that the underlying SQL is different and I can't understand why.

    2. Setting the 'Find' option for Items makes no difference to the speed (still 18 secs), but it is much less useful than the 'Add Items' list.

    3. We make unused items Inactive, but, of course, we can't delete them.

Once again, it's the difference between 'Add Items' and 'Items Supplied' that I'd like explained.

1- Make sure you have the items indexed

2- Make the search "always show Find Items" active in configuration option

3- If you have items that are no longer used you may want to take them out
