Hi all,

Regarding licensing a multi-tenant deployment Multitenant Deployment Architecture - Business Central | Microsoft Learn:

If the tenants reside in the same Microsoft Entra tenant will user A be able to access Tenant X,Y, and Z using only 1 paid full user license?
I have the same question (0)

    Hi

Yes — if all the Business Central tenants (X, Y, Z) reside in the same Microsoft Entra tenant (Azure AD), then one paid full user license is sufficient for User A. The license is tied to the Microsoft Entra ID user, not to each Business Central tenant.

User A will be able to switch between those tenants without requiring multiple licenses, as long as they are all under the same Entra tenant.

    Thanks

    Nimsara

@Nimsara Jayathilaka. Thanks for the response, do you have any official MS documentation to reference?

    Hi,

Licenses are tied to the Microsoft Entra tenant (Azure AD), not to the Business Central database or environment.
A user with one paid license (Essentials or Premium) can access all Business Central environments (including multiple tenants/databases) under the same Microsoft Entra tenant.
If environments are in different Microsoft Entra tenants, the user needs a separate license in each tenant.
All users in an environment must belong to the same Entra tenant.

    Hence,

    • Tenant X, Y, Z under the same Microsoft Entra tenantYes, one license per user is enough.
    • Different Entra tenantsSeparate licenses required.

Please mark “Verified” if it helps.

    Hi,

Yes, one paid Business Central license per user covers all tenants as long as:
    > All tenants are in the same Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) tenant.
    > The user account is assigned the license in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
    > So, User A only needs one license to access Tenant X, Y, and Z within the same Entra tenant.

    Thanks

If user is given access to tenant  , use can acces that 1 license in all tenants but you ensure create user card and assign necessary permissions
    User Card
If you feel this helped , pl mark as "Verified"

    hi

In a multi-tenant Business Central deployment, user licensing is tied to the Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) tenant, not to individual Business Central application tenants. This means that if all Business Central tenants (X, Y, and Z) are within the same Microsoft Entra tenant, a single paid full user license assigned to User A allows them to access all those Business Central tenants without requiring additional licenses. However, if the Business Central tenants are in different Microsoft Entra tenants, then separate licenses would be required.

    Hi,

Licensing in multi-tenant BC deployments can be confusing, especially when multiple environments are hosted under a single Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) tenant.

    Here’s the clean breakdown:

    • Licensing is tied to the Microsoft Entra tenant, not to individual BC environments.
    • If Tenant X, Y, and Z are all under the same Microsoft Entra tenant, then User A only needs one paid BC license (Essentials or Premium) to access all of them.
    • The license must be assigned via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, and the user must be part of the same Entra tenant directory.
    • This setup supports scenarios like multiple companies or environments (e.g., production, sandbox, test) under one organization.

However, if the BC environments are hosted under different Microsoft Entra tenants, then separate licenses are required for each tenant. This is because each Entra tenant is treated as a separate identity boundary, and licenses do not transfer across tenants.

    Also note:

    • Delegated access (e.g., consultants accessing customer tenants) does not inherit licensing. External users must be licensed within the target tenant.
    • Microsoft Entra ID Premium features may have separate licensing rules, especially for identity governance or conditional access.
