Balance field Significance in Employee Card

Hello,
I was trying to make entry in general Journal to make a note of commission paid out to the employee.
The following entry
No Balancing Account No. was entered
Which resulted into the balance on the employee card to show up -23.40

1. What does this balance signify?
2. Please verify:  on further experiment and learning i found that the balance should be zero. The general entry which i made earlier should be -23.40. Which would tell me that the company owes JIM 23.40. Now to settle this I would want to create payment journal line.
3. can we not directly create payment entries and pay commission amount by typing it in?

The balance signifies that you owe that employee -23.40 Dollars. You need to make a payment through the payment journal.

You must go to the payment journal and create a payment to that open document. You can use the Suggest Employee Payment Journal.

system requires 2 types of transactions including user posts the payable amount to the employee via general journal. Then user needs to post another transaction to pay the employee via payment journal. This is a two step process.

When posting any voucher in finance, the balance must be 0. In your example, the balance account should be the bank, where the money comes from.

Hope this can give you some hints.
    Thanks.
