Discontinuing a part

Hi,

We are running Nav 2018 and looking for a way to discontinue the sale of a product.  We would like to take orders until inventory is depleted but not allow any replenishment or orders that would force a negative inventory.  Any help is appreciated.

TIA

I have the same question (1)

    Hi

To discontinue the sale of a product in NAV 2018 while allowing orders until inventory is depleted but preventing replenishment or negative inventory, the best approach is:

    • Enable the "Prevent Negative Inventory" setting in Inventory Setup. This stops posting transactions that would bring inventory below zero.
    • Block the item from purchase to prevent replenishment orders for the discontinued product.
    • Manage sales orders carefully so they cannot exceed available inventory by utilizing the prevent negative inventory setting.
    • NAV 2018 does not have an out-of-the-box "blocked for sales" field like newer Business Central versions, so custom development may be needed to fully block further purchases while allowing sales until stock runs out.

This approach aligns with standard NAV 2018 functionalities and avoids inventory going negative or ordering replenishment of discontinued items.

    Hi,

In NAV 2018 you can do this with standard setup:
    > Item Card → Replenishment Tab → clear the Vendor and set Reordering Policy = Blank → stops replenishment.
    > Item Card → Planning Tab → set Reorder Point = 0 and Safety Stock = 0 → prevents planning lines.
    > Block negative inventory: In Inventory Setup, enable Prevent Negative Inventory.
    > Optional: Set Item Status = Blocked once stock is gone, so no new sales orders can be created.

This way, existing stock can be sold, but system won’t suggest or allow replenishment.

    Thanks

While Yun Zhu does answer the question, I think Microsoft having inventory type "discontinued" would be more helpful overall to businesses. This type could make purchase replenishment blocked while also allowing the sales team to easily see that if we have 5 left, that's all we have left.
If I look at my items and I see "sales inventory" as the item type, I assume we can get more in. So why would I open up the item card on every single item just to view if purchasing is blocked? It's not a good way of utilizing the system nor helpful for new hires who are learning items still.

Hi, first you can enable Prevent Negative Inventory.

    Test in BC: https://yzhums.com/20361/

Then you can block item for purchase.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks but not terribly helpful for my problem.  This project is more urgent and looking at the best way to block purchasing and an easy way to manage SO's against current inventory.

Current version (Business Central) has a blocked field for sales and purchase in addition to the NAV 2018 blocked field. I’d suggest trying a development with the same logic. Providing you aren’t considering an upgrade.
