How to open a Global Search result in a new tab?

Posted on by 285

There are multiple tutorials out there about setting up the global search, such as this one: https://www.crmsoftwareblog.com/2015/03/customizing-global-search-microsoft-dynamics-crm-2015/

However, I've observed the following strange and undocumented behavior. On my old CRM instance, when you clicked on a global search result, it would open in a new tab of the browser. Now, on the new instance (same version or CRM and browser, as well as the exact same CRM settings as the old one), when you click a global search result, it opens in the same tab. Is there any way to bring back this new tab functionality?

CRM Product is moving towards flat UI, avoiding the popups/new window/tabs to match the mobile experience.

You can train the users to close the current record, this will show the search results screen again which is behind the flat UI layer.

There is no settings for this to revert the behavior.
