Guidance of Dynamics Portal Development, Test & Production Environments

Posted on by 180

Seeking to provision a Dynamics Portal (Customer Portal) Online with Dynamics 365 CE Onlinev9x. The requirement is to create separate environments for development, testing and production. The CRM instances are on the same subscription but separate instances.

Failing to find any proper documentation on this topic. Members, please share your experience and point me to some good direction.

Yes BIR, you can provision any of the supported portal in all the three instances. All three CRM instances may have same type of portal as well.

If found useful, please mark the answer as verified.

Thanks for the response Aric. Details you have mentioned are as per my understanding.

The environments are under the same tenant/subscription. I am hoping it's possible to provision the same type of portal i.e. Customer for the instances (after buying).

    Hi BiR,

Your subscription/tenant includes a single free instance of portal.

If you need to have portal enabled for all three environments, you will have to purchase additional portals for your other environments as well.

Although I would say that this is of course a necessity to have portals in all three environments, the one thing that you should be aware of is that portal data migration from one environment to another is not as straight forward as we would like.

There is a utiIity called Portal Record Mover from XrmToolbox, but I've heard some people having issues with and that it would not move all the records. The other option is the Configuration Migration tool to migrate the data from sandbox to production which seems to work pretty well, and gives you more control then Portal Record Mover.

    Hope this helps.
