Serialized items, in inventory without serial numbers

We have been through everything that we can think of over the last few weeks and have no solutions.

We have serialized items in our inventory, with no serial numbers, it is blank, no numbers or letters.

We have tried everything to fix our inventory and now I am asking you all.

Please help if you can, it is one of those things that drives you nuts because you know there is a way to fix it, but the answer never comes to light.

Hi Larry, do you mean that your serial number records are corrupt? i.e. You have a quantity of an item, that is serially tracked, but there are no serial numbers entered? Have you tried updating the relevant table with serial numbers through SQL?

    Hi Larry,

The table containing the item serial numbers is the IV00200.

Is this where you are seeing the Items with blank serials.

If so you can update the SERLNMBR filed with a value followed by a check links and reconcile of Inventory.

You may want to look at the IV30400 table to see the source of the problem.

    Hope this helps

Hello Ian, Yes that is correct. Somehow, someone has done some transactions putting into inventory, a serialized item, with the serial number blank. And there is no way to do a transaction to get rid of these items because GP needs a serial number to complete the transaction i.e. get it out of inventory.

I will have to ask my IT person about the SQL thing, I am not sure what that is.

Where I see the blank serial numbers is when I try to remove the item from Inventory, using inventory transaction, or SOP to sell it, it asks me to chosse a serial number and there are none to be chosen, are two examples.

    Hi Larry,

Did you upload records direct into the SQL tables...or do you have any integrations running that import item quantities etc. This could be one explanation - quantities imported with out updating serial numbers. I only mention this, because if you do, you may want to revisit how the integrations are running to see if there is an issue with importing serial numbers. Whatever is the cause its most likley data corruption. You should be able to update the SQL tables.

If there are a lot of item quantities that are missing serial numbers, you could do something like the following:

Select * from TABLENAME where SERIAL NUMBER FIELD = ''

    Copy this to XL.

Insert the serial numbers in a column in XL and then use the XL sheet to create a series of update queries that will update the SQL table.

    Thank you Guys.

I showed your answers to the IT guy and he new what you all were talking about. He said that we could go to these tables and create a serial number for these items that do not have one, then we will be able to do a transaction to remove them from inventory. Because all I need is a dummy serial numer so that I can remove the few items that we need to remove form INV.

Re: Serialized items, in inventory without serial numbers

Run Check Links and then Reconcile against your inventory tables.  Serial numbers for serialized items will be manufactured by these tasks.  If you need to change the serial number to match what was actually received, edit the IV00200 AFTER the system creates the necessary records for you.
