Data Migration from one environment to another

Hi,

We have a requirement to move one CRM system into another.

It's essentially just a lift and shift of all entities, fields, relationships, data, workflows, business rules etc and moving them to another environment (which has its own set of existing entities, data etc.).

So, to be clear we don't want to overwrite the 2nd environment with the 1st. We just want to merge them and ensure all the entities/data from both environments exist under one combined environment.

Is the CRM Data Migration Tool contained in the SDK fit for this purpose? Would it pose any issues? Are other tools more fit for this purpose?

Thanks for your help.

Richard

    Hello,

I never used the OOTB data migration tool so you need to check this out if it fits.

However, for data migration, i used in the past Scribe (not free unfortunately) and you can create your workflow and in there query all data from an entity with a filter checking if it doesn't exist yet and then push the wanted data.

    Really easy to use.

    Hi,

I'm not sure there is any tool that is fit for the "merge".. you can bring over configuration/customization from the second env to the first, but, that way, you will likely overwrite forms/views/charts/dashboards (you won't lose any fields/data, though)

Once you've done that, you may want to bring over the data. Data Migration tool might help, but it depends on whether you'll have conflicts and how you would want to resolve them. If it's anything more complicated than just "take data from one environment, push it to the other", you may have to figure out how to merge that data. In which case I'd be looking at SSIS+Kingsway/CozyRoc and/or Scribe..

Thanks for your comments guys. Clement you mentioned Scribe, is there a way for it to create the entities and fields too if they do not exist or is it all about the data.

    Thanks.

From my knowledge, i only used it as data migration, not entity creation.
but to solve this, you simply need to export the solution containing the entities and import it in the new environment then you will have access to all entities for the data migration.

The only problem is the entity I want to move from one environment to the other is the case entity. It is of course called the same in both environments and will just merge them. There is also no way of changing the entity schema name to avoid this problem. Does anyone know a way around this? or perhaps a quick way to build entities, fields, forms etc.
