is it possible to change an item type from services to sales inventory after the fact?

We have a handful of items that were setup as 'services' but now they want to track inventory of the items so we want to switch them to 'sales inventory'.  Is it possible to change the item type after we have setup the item and sold it?

It is probably far easier to use a different item number maybe with -1 after it or an A, but if that is not an option, you may be able to do it via the backend.   Prior to doing that, I would make sure the item is not on any sales or purchase orders.   Services is '5' in the table and 'Sales Inventory' is a 1.   Afterwards, I would do a full maintenance (checklinks and reconciles in SOP, POP and IV (in that order).   I would also create a test company and do the steps in their first so results can be verified.

You cannot change an item type once the item has sales history. SO if you want you can remove all of that history and then you can change the item type. You would have to delete the item and then put it right back in as a Sales Inventory item. As Dan stated you need to make sure the items are not on any open sales or purchase order.

While I normally don't advocate this kind of thing, I have done it many times without a problem. Following on to Dan's suggestion, I change the [ITEMTYPE] field of the IV00101 table to 1.

    Kind regards,

I think I will give this a try on our test server.  Are there any specific things to test after the change?

I would run a couple of transactions through and make sure the qtys are in fact being tracked.  I have not had any problems doing this.

Since this is a back end fix - is it necessary to clear all history & delete and re-add the item before changing the item type?  I realize it is likely 'safer' but we would like to keep the history and change the type.  Of course running this in a test environment beforehand- and doing maintenance and reconciliations afterward.

If so - which ones -ie  Inventory & Sales & Purchases?

Did you get any luck with updating from Inventory to Service? I'm having the same issue and would love to hear if any resolutions worked. I'm also trying to do an export to upload new items and it will not accept.

What tool are you using to try and upload new items? What exactly is happening and what is the distinct error messages?

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    John,

When you change it using SQL, you will not have to clear all history, etc. I would make sure that you do not have any Work or Open transactions with that item on it.

    Hi Leslie,

I tried to update Item Type, changing from "Sales Inventory" to "KIT" in IV00101, but getting following error message, not sure what that message means. Any help will be much appreciated.

    SQL Script: Update IV00101 SET ITEMTYPE  = '3' where ITEMNMBR = 'W_XGH001'

    Error message:

    Msg 208, Level 16, State 1, Procedure ep_Audit_U_IV00101, Line 1 [Batch Start Line 2]

    Invalid object name 'WXATAUDIT.dbo.IV00101_AUDIT'.
