All Records of a certain User get New Owner (automatically without interaction)

Hello, yesterday something very strange and magic happened to our CRM 2011 on-premise system. All records of a particular userA where shifted over to userB by SYSTEM. Basically all accounts, their contacts and all related activities got assigned userB if there where assigned previously to userA. All this happened during the same time frame, around 30 min (this is the time it took the CRM system to re-assing the records one by one). All I could see was that first userA did not see any activities any more under My Activities view, than all contacts disappeared and finally also the accounts. A search for account owner = userB, Modified by = SYSTEM, Modified on = today gave me the whole list of missing userA records back. I have re-assigned userA to these accounts, automatically userA was also set for contact owner and at least all open activities (is set like this in our CRM). Even though, without any rule to follow several already closed activities like phone calls, etc. also got re-assigned userA while re-importing accounts with modified owner, others, even of the same type didn't, however.

Opportunities of userA where not affected by this magic. Any idea what could have caused this strange modifications. I where connected to CRM while this happened since userA alerted my as the administrator. Unfortunately I did not see any System job running or even been setup that way while this all happened.

First I thought of a virus, but in that case my whole CRM would have had been affected, not only userA and userB, 2 out of about 30 users.

    Hallo Dieter,

The behaviour sounds very much like a workflow or a plugin. Are there any such workflows or plugins in the system that could cause this behavior?

Also, in case auditing is turned on, I would suggest taking a look at the logs to see how the change came about.

Dieter, I would suspect someone re-assigned the account records, therefore with the relationship between accounts and contacts being parental, any of these related records would move as well. This will also include the activities associated with these records. I would look at the audits against the account records to see who initiated the ownership change.

Hi, I know about all these things like workflows and other plugins. This was the first place where I was looking for, but unfortunatelly there is no such a workflow, we only have about 4 active worklows, and no plugin doing such things.

Auditing was not enabled, I have now enabeld it on Account and Contact owner change, but too late now.

Hi Adrian, I know about this relatoinship between parentla accounts and their records. This is set like in case of account re-assigment all contacts and open activites get the new owner, completed activities do keep the old owner. I have double-checked and tested this now again and it is still set like this.

Also, we are talking here about 1300 accounts and 4000 contacts, so nobody would start to re-assign that much items at once. Also, this owner-switch did not even have followed the parental rules mentioned above, To me it looked like all objects, regardless the fact they are completed or not have been got the new owner. But items which bleonged to an account/contact in charge but their owner was not this userA, have kept their ownership. More or less it looked to me like that, there might have been expections to this rule, but basically that was it. Any record where userA was owner got the new owner, all others where kept with their original owner.

I have now manually cleand it up as goot it was possible by doing searches (views) with related criteria and have moved the ownership of the found results to the initial user again.

    Thanks anyway.

    Dieter
