System Administrator gets error "The logged-on user does not have the appropriate security permissions"

Hello,

I am experiencing the weirdest error in a Dynamics CRM 4 environment.

The system administrator (that is, the account used to initially install and configure CRM) has the access mode set to ADMINISTRATIVE, and also has the System Administrator role assigned to it.

The system administrator create, edit and disable users, move records (including users) through business units and so on. However, there is one problem:

For some uncanny reason, the system administrator (nor any other administrator) can edit user roles for any user on the system. When trying to add or remove user roles to any user, Dynamics CRM returns the error:

"The logged-on user does not have the appropriate security permissions [...]"

I also double checked that the admin account in question are listed in the Dynamics CRM server Deployment Admin. I even tried to add additional administrators and use these but it doesn't work...

Any ideas of what might be wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
P.

It doesn't sound good.. Have you looked at this KB Article. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953962. It may help you identify where the issue is at.

You will also want to download the CRM 4.0 Diagnostics Tool  and Stunnware's Log file viewer. http://jianwang.blogspot.com/2010/03/download-crm-40-diagnostics-tool.html

This will help you find the real error.

    You just mention the below...

The system administrator (that is, the account used to initially install and configure CRM) has the access mode set to ADMINISTRATIVE

Can you change the access mode to Full.

    All,

Thank you for your comments. In the end, I had to manually edit the SQL database in order to fix the issue. Basically I had to do two things by fidling on the CRM database.

    1. Change the access mode from the Administrator user, and gave him FULL ACCESS
    2. Change add the role of System Administrator to the Administrator user

After doing that I gave another user System Administrator role, logged in as this user, and then removed the roles of the previous administrator and re-added them manually, in the Dynamics CRM way.

This article helped me a lot: https://community.dynamics.com/blogs/crminogic/comments/55928.aspx
