GP and MR crashing every day - restart on server resolves issue.

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello!

I have a customer that is experiencing a crash in both GP and MR. Restarting the SQL server (nightly) temporarily resolves the issue but it comes back.

Below are the logs of the errors. The customer tried installing the patch in KB article: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2640103 but when installing it errors out saying it does not apply:

We recommended they spin up another server to run MR instead of running both on one server. Also gave them some specs/system requirements so hopefully they will beef them up a bit!

    Thanks everyone!

    Hey Dan,

I know this probably is not what you want to hear, but you should use caution with trying to run a trace for a long period of time. The process is quite a hog which could cause perf problems. Also if you are not on top of clearing it out the process will eat up a lot of disc space.

    Thank you,

    Ken Hubbard

    Dan,

How many users do you have? Even for a pretty small installation that looks way underprovisoned to run both SQL and MR. I suspect if you watch the resource consumption on the VM you will notice it maxing out on memory just before the crash.

Next step we are going to run a trace more than likely for the entire day until it happens again since it is random each day.

They are 100% virtual on vmware. The server has 4GB ram and 2vcpu and is running windows 2008R2 fully patched.

This looks like the .Net framework issue, I'm not sure if you find good help on this topic here.

I would make sure all the latest updates and fixes are installed for Windows in regards to the .Net, may be even reinstalled.

    Dan,

Ken's suggestions are good ones. Could you also give us some information about the servers hardware (or virtual hardware) configuration?

    Regards,

    Kirk

    Hey Dan,

This is a pretty tough issue to troubleshoot. It might be  handy to capture a DEXSQL.log and SQL trace to see what the last item called is and what does that call look like in the trace.

What are they doing in GP when it crashes?
