ADFS configuration in CRM 2016

(1) ShareShare

I have DEV and PROD server. I would need to configure ADFS in CRM.

Environment setup:

  • Active Directory -separate server
  • ADFS- separate server
  • DEV-separate server
  • PROD-serparate server

I would need answer for the below question.

  1. What is the purpose of ADFS configuration in CRM?
  2. Shall I use single ADFS server to configure both DEV and PROD CRM 2016?
  3. How should I configure ADFS server for CRM 2016?
  4. To enable ADFS do my CRM need to expose public?

RE: ADFS configuration in CRM 2016

    Hi Alagu,

I would suggest reading he following article:  technet.microsoft.com/.../gg188602.aspx

It is required for a public facing CRM environment.

The article above I think answers most of your questions.

    Thanks,

RE: ADFS configuration in CRM 2016

I am no expert on ADFS at all but I have set up ADFS 2.0 for authentication for CRM 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016. I used the same ADFS server for ALL of my CRM servers which I would recommend

    1. We have used ADFS to allow users to authenticate against an Active Directory domain. We have 1 AD server, 1 ADFS server, 1 CRM 2011 server, 1 CRM 2011 SQL Server and so on. When you expose your CRM to be internet facing (available from anywhere, not just an intranet), you will get an ADFS login screen. You would then provide credentials from an account in your AD who is also set up as a user in your CRM organisation. It will therefore  only allow authenticated users access to your internet facing deployment of CRM

    2. Yes however I wonder do you really need a DEV and PROD server. Why not just have 1 server and then 2 organisations - DEV and PROD? Unless you plan to carry out alot of restarts etc. of the entire dev server for some reason, the organisations themselves would be completely separate. Or unless you believe your async service won't be able to handle both production and development environments?

    3. There are many guides available such as blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/.../step-by-step-configuring-crm-2013-internet-facing-deployment-ifd. I used this one. There are many alternatives. Give yourself alot of time if you are doing it for the first time.

    4. I'm not sure as I'm not an expert, but I do believe there isn't much point in having ADFS for your CRM unless you plan to expose your CRM publicly. If you want to just allow for your CRM to be available when connected to your company network, there may be easier ways than setting up ADFS e.g. exploring pass-through authentication from your employers own AD? If you are exposing your CRM publicly, you will also need to consider security certificates such as Wildcard SSL certificates. We generate ours using OpenSSL tool.
