What exactly is the function of the documentindex/Indexed Article (126) entity?

Hi there, 

As above, what exactly is the function of this entity. I know it relates to the indexing of Knowledge Articles, however, what exactly is its function? When are Indexed Article records generated? 

I am trying to re-create an issue on CRM, however, I am unable to on-prem, is this only related to online instances, or am I completely off the mark here?
