Or do I need to install GP 2016 (version 16.00.404) first? And then install GP 2016 R2 (16.00.552)?
Sincerely,

I have gone directly from 12.00.2038 to 16.00. 0552 a few times now with no issues.
Thanks, Beat.

Hi Steve,
Technically the DVD containing the setup of GP 2016 in the R2 image is the same.. the only difference being the service pack that was added under the 'updates' folder on the DVD.. You could also just download this one (KB3194385) and apply it.
I tried the same steps, and the setup of R2 was failing because it was simply launching the Update/remove from the existing RTM installation.
I was told by Microsoft that this was 'normal' process for an R2 media.
Richard,
Then Leslie is advising to Upgrade to GP 2016 (version 16.00.404) first. The next step would be to download the MDGP2016_R2_DVD (2016 R2) and install that. Yes?
Steve S.
Steve, Leslie is always right, the general rule of thumb with GP and upgrades is that you can only jump two versions at a time. The trick sometimes is be sure of the particular service pack version within the major version. Also, always check your DYNAMICS.SET for the full set of of which modules are installed. You do not want to leave anything behind for future upgrades.
Leslie,
Thank you for answering (and working late on a Sunday night). Since the customer is on GP 2013, it seems that i could upgrade them to MDGP2016_R2_DVD (2016 R2) directly only if they were on Version 12.00.2130 or later.
Hi,
Below is the upgrade path to GP 2016 as released by Microsoft.
Kind regards,
Leslie

There is no direct upgrade from Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 to Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016. You must first upgrade from Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 to either Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 January Hotfix (12.00.1826) or later or 2015 R2 or later and then upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016.
