FRx to MR migration tool reports success but nothing could be further from the truth.

I performed all the usual FRx cleanup tasks and proceeded to migrate to MR using the wizard. At the end the migration report came back saying all was well but when I go into MR and look at the rows, the layout is there but all the GL links are blank. There are over 50 rows definitions and they all came back this way. Any clue as to what may have caused this and what can I do to perform a more complete migration?

    Hello Richard,

Unfortunately, most migration issues are caused by invalid/inconsistent FRx data. The most common resolution is to "clean up" the FRx data prior to the migration. I am not sure which actions you have already taken, so below are the general guidelines to address the problem you encountered:

    1. In general, this consists of: making a backup of the SysData folder; removing all non-GL companies (companies which do not currently exist in Dynamics); removing all specification sets which are not actively used (you cannot delete "Default"); removing all old catalogs/rows/columns/trees which are not used; associating all rows/columns/trees which are remaining with a catalog; etc. These steps will resolve the migration issues in a majority of instances. There is also some additional guidelines in the articles below:

2425087                Information on using the Microsoft Management Reporter Migration Wizard

    support.microsoft.com/.../2425087

There is also a detailed migration document available at the following link with additional details:

Microsoft Management Reporter: Installation, Migration, and Configuration Guides

    www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx;id=5916

If modifications are needed to your FRx data, but you do not want to impact the live FRx environment, then it is suggested to create a completely separate test FRx environment. Please note that this process will not include copying the SysData folder, but the steps for completing this are included in the article below:

861979 How to move Microsoft FRx 6.7 to a new server

    support.microsoft.com/.../861979

    2. Make sure there are no users in FRx during the migration process. If the SysData folder was copied to a new location, the Migration Wizard will still read the specification sets (.f32 files) from the live SysData folder due to hardcoded paths in the FRx files.

    3. If there continues to be an issue, the next suggestion is to export all building blocks which are desired for migration, and create a brand-new .f32 file(s) with a new name.  Then make sure to remove all references to the old specification sets in FRx before attempting the migration again.

    Thanks!

FRx was cleaned as best as possible.  First it was moved to a old W7 workstation and only the reports used were left. They all worked with no unused sections. The FW companies were all removed and databases compacted and all g32 files were removed as well as any unused f32 files. The migration utility reports success across all reports. Now this particular FRx installation has always been troublesome.  As a matter of fact during the migration I noticed that the wizard only saw 5 of the 6 segment when doing the mapping. I have asked the client how much more effort the want to expend on the FRx to MR migration.

    Hello Richard,

Thanks for the reply. I did not see a mention that a brand new .f32 file was created for the reports, so that is definitely as step you will want to complete (Step #3 above) as at times there is file corruption you cannot see from inside of FRx due to bad records in the .f32 file. If the problem continues, you can review the Event Viewer for any messages output during the migration (Applications and Services Logs | Microsoft | Dynamics, there are several MR-* logs). You could also open a support case and provide a copy of the SysData folder for review.

    Hope that helps!

At $500 a case with Microsoft that is not going to happen. What was done at the very beginning was to export the spec sets out to a tdb file and then a fresh copy of FRx was installed and the tdb was imported. I could start with a fresh f32 file but that will depend on whether the client wishes to continue to finance this project.

    Hi Richard,

What messages are output in the Event Viewer?

This was another annoying piece of the puzzle. There were no errors in the Event Viewer. As I said they had been using FRx since the DYN Enterprise days. Who knows what was in their files.

    Hi Richard,

Do all of the FRx catalogs have a valid company ID saved with them?

    Thanks!

They all had the only one that we cared about.  As soon as the client gives the go ahead to proceed I will other mop up operations.
