Routing with Family in production orders

I noticed if you use Family on a Production order that it ignores the routing setup on each product in the Family.

Does anyone know of a way for BC to use the routing assigned to the product and not the routing on a family setup?
I have the same question (0)

Yes, generally, when using "Family" in a production order, the system typically does not directly use the individual routing set up for each product within the family. Instead, it usually utilizes a shared or generic routing that applies to the entire family. This is because a family is designed to produce multiple co-products from a single production run, sharing a common manufacturing process.

If you want a routing assigned to each of the Items, you will not use a Family Production Order.  The family assumes a shared process with BOM allocations per Item produced, which means a single Routing.

You would either use a Production Order per Item produced or a "Make-to-Order" Production Order with each of the Items defined as Sub-Assemblies of the Parent or each other.  If you go the "Make-to-Order" route, you need to know the sub-assemblies are consumed as part of the process, so they will not stay in Inventory for future sales.

Hope this helps give you some guidance.

That's the very first rulebook like if you are willing to use Family then make sure all the listed items shares the same Routings.

    Hello,

In Business Central, when you use a Product Family on a production order, the system typically applies the routing defined at the family level and ignores the individual routings assigned to each product within that family. Unfortunately, out-of-the-box BC does not provide a standard way to override this behavior to automatically use each product’s individual routing when producing from a family.

To achieve your exact requirement, you would likely need a customization or an extension that modifies the production order creation logic to check and apply the routing at the item level rather than defaulting to the family routing. Without customization, the system treats the family routing as the default for all products in that family.

If you want to avoid customization, the best alternative is to not use Product Families for production orders where routing differences matter. Instead, create production orders directly for each individual item so that the system picks up the routing assigned to that specific product.

Hope this will answer your question!
