Commerce Scale Unit in offline mode

Hello!,

We are planning to implement an hybrid topology (Mix and Match) according to what is showed in this doc:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/commerce/dev-itpro/retail-in-store-topology

This is because, in some stores, connectivity is bad.

The question is if it works to create async sales orders, customers, etc, because in this article:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/commerce/dev-itpro/retail-store-system-begin

is a note:

So, the information is a bit difficult to understand.

And, in case it should work (I'm saying for hours without connectivity) if I can use Cloud Pos (in the note, says that the only way to work offline is with MPOS locally).

Thanks you!

Best Regards!

    You are correct,

If you are wanting offline functionality you will need an offline DB and MPOS.

The below article covers Online and offline point of sale (POS) operations

    Hello GCreus,

i'm currently facing the same question! Have you been able to find an answer?

Documentation is quite clear on what a POS with offline capabilities would bring, but I can't find exhaustive information on what functionalities an online POS + RSSU would allow if WAN connectivity is lost? (basically the 3rd use case starting from the left on the "topology" image shared).

Documentation just says it would enable "cross terminal transactions", but not sure if sales can be processed, if inventory look-up would work by accessing RSSU etc.

    Thank you!

    Hi,

I tested a few months ago. I could make some Cash And Carrys sales and Async Sales Orders (by default configuration) and customer Creation. There's a few capabilities (like Gift Cards) that can't be used if you don't have connection with HQ, but you can continue operating.

We quit that topology because I need it for 140+ stores and it requires SQL Standard (with license) so I'm testing the new Commerce App (new MPOS) capabilities to avoid that.

The requirement for Standard license is based on your volume and performance requirement. SQL standard is not a mandatory requirement for RSSU. You might require SQL standard with Commerce App as well, if your masters are big in number. For a store with bad connectivity and unpredictable internet, I would always prefer a RSSU over a Cloud scale unit with offline.

The main issue we faced just running with  MPOS + offline DB with Cloud Scale unit is that, you cannot close and open shift if there is no internet. Sometimes, the it might take a week to restore the internet in some remote locations. Even if we bring in a 3g dongle as backup it cannot handle traffic from all POS.

But with RSSU, you can run the transactions without much issue as you can work just similar to CSU, but without RTS transactions. The backup internet (3G) just needs to be connected to RSSU to sync data.
